GROUP NEWS

Rothes FC
Well, we've come to the end of another season and although we would have liked to finish higher up the league, we didn't do too badly.  The high point of the season was playing in the final of 'The North of Scotland Cup'.
Young player Duncan Goodall was chosen in the last eighteen for the Highland League Select.  A good omen for the future is that Rothes Youth Team (under 18s) won the Highland Youth Cup in April, beating Fraserburgh 2-1 in the final played at Banff.
We are having a fete and 5-a-side competition at Mackessack Park on Sunday July 25th so we hope for good weather and a good turnout.  The weekly Lotto Draw prize is over £1000 again.  Definitely worth a try for £1.  Tickets available from the social club or any Rothes FC committee member.

The Rothes Horticultural Society
The Flower Show was founded by the late Mr Bob Johnston in 1983, a keen showman in his time.  Other past Presidents were Mr David Scott (Elchies) and Mrs Edith Shepherd (Rothes).  The Flower Show caters for all ages, from 3 yrs old to Senior Citizens.
The show area this year has been extended to include Fochabers, Mosstodloch and Lhanbryde, as printed in the schedule, which is now available in the local shops for the show which this year is on Sat 11th Sept.  The best kept garden competition will be judged on the 5th August.
Anyone wishing to enter, please forward their names to any member of the society.  New members are always welcome.
'Please grow for show'

Rothes Bowling Club
Bowling is now in full swing at the Club, and would welcome some new members.  The annual Open Pairs Tournament, which attracts a large entry from the Moray and Banff area, takes place on Sundays 18th & 25th July, with the final being held on Sunday 1st August.
The Famous Grouse have withdrawn their sponsorship of this event, but the club have been fotunate in securing Rothes Garage, Land Street to take over as sponsors, and are very grateful to Graeme and Janice.
Spectators are most welcome to come along.  Teas, etc. are available in the clubhouse.

Rothes Ladies' Group
March saw us having a lady from Keith 'Aristocrafts' who demonstrated how to make one or two of her crafts and showed others that some of the ladies purchased.
April saw us in a different mood.  We were all listening to how we could enjoy 'Gentle Exercise'.  Izzie Graham a Physyotherapist from Dr Gray's gave us a very interesting talk and showed us the exercises.  We promise to do as we are told??!!
May.  Our last meeting for the session was our AGM after which we had fun, Easy Quiz and Jumbled Photos of Stars to find and then a few games of Bingo.
June.  Our outing is on the 12th of June to Clanland, Seal Point, Dingwall then tea at Beauly.

Rothes Visitor Centre will be opening in early June.  It will again be held in the cottage in New Street.  Anyonw wanting information, or who is willing to help, contact Sheila Brumby tel. 831588 or Betty Johnston tel. 831550

Rothes Golf Club
Readers of
The Rothesian who have taken a walk recently to Blackhall Farmhouse will have noticed that the new clubhouse for Rothes Golf Club is well under construction.  The old farmhouse has been gutted, ready for turning into the new lounge, the foundations for the new part laid and lower walls built.  There is a considerable difference between the floor of the building and the level of the car park which was not forseen and some precautionary work will have to be done to prevent the next flash flood washing into the clubhouse.
Although the scheduled date for completion is the middle of December, we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will be sufficiently far advanced for the Annual Prizegiving to be held in the new lounge in November.
Meanwhile, the current season is well under way with the usual competitions and matches being played by all Sections of the Club and the fine weather has led to some good scores.  The Seniors, ie those over 60, have been meeting on a Wednesday morning since the end of April for a leisurely nine holes and any member, male or female, who qualifies by virtue of age is welcome to join us.  The standard of golf is immaterial as the competition is run as a 'Stableford' so your good holes count and your bad holes are ignored!
Membership renewals are running at about the same level as last year and should reach the 280+ that we have had for the last few years.  Those who were members last year are reminded that subscriptions must be paid before they can take part in this season's Club Competitions.
One member who has renewed his 'Country' membership for 1999 is Alistair MacQueen, now living in Copthorne, W Sussex and a member of Ifield Golf & Country Club.  He says that arthritis has nearly put paid to his playing game.  He also sent a donation to the fund for the new clubhouse as did many others when renewing their subscriptions and we are very grateful to all who have helped us with donations both large and small because until we reached our target of 25% of the total cost, the main funding bodies, the National Lottery, the Foundation for Sport and the Arts and the MBSE, would not allow us to start on the project.
Finally, the Club is often asked for photographs of the Course and Clubhouse for inclusion in tourist related material.  I know that some members are keeping a photographic record of the construction of the new Clubhouse but if anyone has any good shots of the Course or Clubhouse it would be interesting for the Club to have a 'Library' on which to draw.  Spare copies of prints or negatives from which copies could be made should be handed to the Secretary, John Tilley.
