ROTHES BOYS' BRIGADE
Rothes Boys' Brigade has been in existence for some considerable time - as far as I know since the end of 1939/45 war. Nowadays, the Brigade (Junior Section) meet every Tuesday evening between 6pm and 7.30pm in the Primary School, with a membership of 18. The boys, who range in age from 6 to 10 years, work in groups to achieve various badges. They also have quiz games, figure marching practice, finishing up with a short prayer. Recently we held a Coffee Morning in the Church Hall, the proceeds of which will help to pay for our Christmas outing, which is usually a visit to a pantomime show, either in Inverness or Aberdeen. We also have an outing during the early summer. In previous years we have visited Landmark, Falconry Centre and a park at Huntly, and even a visit to Cooper Park along with a cinema show in Elgin. A Moray Battalion Quiz was held in Rothes and our boys came second equal in the contest. In the past we have competed in various events such as football matches, high jump and marching competitions. Our year lasts from September through until April. Julie Christie
ROTHES GOLF CLUB
Rothes Golf Club Raffle raised £1194.72 after expenses. The winners were £200 G. Scott, Spey Drive, £100 B. Masson, 46 Green St. and £50 R. Keir, Aberlour with nineteen other prizes drawn. The ladies section coffee morning raised £270. Both committees wish to record their thanks to all who donated and supported the fundraising events.
The Annual General Meeting of the Rothes Golf Club was held in the Ben Aigen Hotel on Friday 4th December. By changing to a Friday from the usual Wednesday it had been hoped to attract more members but in the event the number attending was about the same - a mere twenty out of over two hundred.
Kenny MacPhee took the chair for his last time as Club Captain; he will be succeeded for the next two years by Mike Mitchell but there were no nominations for Vice Captain to assist Mike and to succeed him in two years time. The appointment has been remitted to the Club Council but if anyone feels that they can put something back into the Club by serving as Vice-Captain and Captain please let any member of the Council know. Jock Eddie and John Tilley were re-elected as Treasurer and Secretary respectively and the following were re-elected after a three year stint or elected to the Council: Mrs. Main, Mrs Bruce, R. Clark, A. Grant, D. Henderson, S. Mackenzie, R. Mackie, K. MacPhee, S. Pert, G. Scott and D. Slessor.
After accepting reports from the Captain and Secretary who gave a resume of the playing and administrative activities of the Club, the treasurer presented the financial statement which showed that with subsriptions up but bar taking down because of the bad summer weather the turnover had remained much the same. We had various donations which had been put towards the fund for the building of the new clubhouse. All three were thanked for their efforts during the year and particular mention was also made of the Greenkeeper, Willie Younie, who had managed to keep the course in excellent condition under very difficult weather conditions.
On a proposal of the Council, the meeting agreed that subscriptions for 1999 would remain the same as 1998. The usual letter and subscription form will be going out to all members in January.
An update was given on the position regarding the clubhouse but after tenders are received on Thursday 10 December the full financial position will be clearer. We hope then to be able to identify work that can be done by members as 'contributions in kind' and how much more the Club will have to raise to satisfy the 25% requirement of the National Lottery Grant.
The meeting closed with thanks to Kenny MacPhee for his efforts during the two years of his captaincy and also to Benny and Vera Mearns for their hospitality and use of the Ben Aigen facilities.
