The Meetings
The first meeting of the P.T.A. was held in the School Hall on 11th November 1981. The Head Teacher at the time was Mr. Donald MacKay. Prior to this date there had been a Parents' Committee. Of the original P.T.A. Committee, only Jim Holmes, Bruce Gordon, Marion Tawse and Helen Taylor are still resident in Rothes. The only teacher member still in Rothes is Mrs. Mary McVean. It was in November 1982 that the Constitution was formally adopted and seconded by Mrs. Mary McVean and Mrs. Marion Tawse respectively.
Since that time, many faces have come and gone, but the basic remit of the P.T.A. remains the same i.e. 'to further good relationships and understanding between parents and the school. It involves parents, teachers and pupils in fund raising activities thus enhancing the amenities of the school, which, in turn, promotes the well being of its pupils'.
This just means we all want the same things for our children and we are here to fund raise for the 'little extras'. These could be new books for the school library, School trips, new computer software or new sports gear. In fact, anything which is not catered for by the normal educational budget. The latest of these fund raising ventures was the Treasure Hunt in August and the Coffee Morning in October. You may have read in the local press that they raised just short of £800 and £450 respectively. A lot of money by anyone's standards, but not much when you hear that a new hockey/football team strip for the school could cost in excess of £500.
Your support as parents, aunties, grannies, big brothers or even old pupils is greatly appreciated. Rothes School has a long standing reputation for being good to it's pupils, let's keep it that way. Your comments or queries are always welcome. Please do not hesitate to contact Raymond Johnston, P.T.A. Convenor on 831466 or Ann Appleford, Head Teacher, on 831269.
My sincere thanks to Mrs. Mary McVean for her assistance with details of the early years. Raymond Johnston, Convenor
