The Rothesian
Poets' Corner

Ken Grant a former pupil of Rothes School has recently had a selection of poetry printed under the title "Portraits to Poetry".

Ken is the son of the late Sandy and Jean Grant of Sunnybraes, Orton.   He attended Rothes School for five years, first in Primary 6 & 7 then for three years in Rothes Secondary before leaving to take up work in the forestry in 1965.   Over the past twenty five years Ken has become a well known wedding portrait and press photographer in Moray.
His poems are a reflection of Ken's memories, experiences and dreams and clearly show his romantic side and keen sense of humour.

"Paint me a mountain"
Paint me a mountain, overlooking the sea
Paint me a sky, as blue as can be
Paint her hair long, curly and fair
Paint a pretty dress, for her to wear
Paint me a smile as big as you can
Huge is the heart of a lovesick man.

My Home
Oft in springtime delighted I roam
Around the fair scenes that enrich my home
Ben Aigen, so lofty rears its peak to the sky
While down in the valley the Spey rushes by.

Like the cross of St.Andrews the village lies still
As I gaze down upon it from the old Castlehill.
While all around me is the beautiful scene
Of the fields and meadows in muted green.

On the right is the Conrock so rugged and bare
For the axe of the woodman has plainly been there
While over the burnie that wimples nearby
The dust of my kindred does peacefully lie.

Oh! I'll never forget it, wherever I roam
I still will remember there's no place like home.
And the fair little village that once gave me birth
For me is the sweetest and dearest on earth.
