LOCAL AGENDA 21
The Bairns' Brig project was one of only 15 projects throughout the UK to be published in this year's Local Agenda handbook. The published projects were considered by the committee as fine examples of joint community projects. Nick Brown from The Moray Council's Planning Department attended the national conference at which our project was highlighted. A copy of our entry is available at Rothes Primary School if anyone would like to see it. Since this success the project was described to delegates attending the Highland and Islands Business conference at the Craigellachie Hotel on Friday 4 December and the Education Department has nominated Rothes Primary School for the Schools' Curriculum Award 2000. Successful awards will be presented in the Millennium Dome.
PROTECTION FOR THE RIVER SPEY
Many people in the Rothes area will appreciate the value of the River Spey for fishing, distilling and tourism. People may not know that the Spey is also of national and international importance for four of the animal species that live in the river. The atlantic salmon, sea lamprey, otter and freshwater pearl mussel are all rare, threatened or endangered throughout Europe. It is because the Spey is so important for these species that it has recently been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is proposed as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the EC Habitats Directive. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has recently produced a leaflet on the River Spey and its wildlife. If you would like a copy of the leaflet or would like to know more about the designations please contact the Elgin office of SNH on 01343 541551.
FLOODING UPDATE
Work started on the Rothes - Land Street Drainage Improvements on Wednesday 2nd December at the surface water outfall at the former railway line. The works will cease for two weeks over the festive season and should be completed by early February. Preliminary investigations by The Moray Council have identified a need for additional work to be carried out at the rear of the properties at the south end of High Street; a further survey is being undertaken to establish the extent of the works necessary to alleviate the flooding problems in order that costs can be budgeted for.
SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO ROTHES!
Rothes Fire Brigade assisted by "Santa Claus" will be accompanying the decorated fire engine around Rothes for their annual door to door collection, in aid of the Fire Service Benevolent Fund. For the last five out of six years, all the lads at the station are proud that Rothes has raised the most money per firefighter for this fund and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support for the future.
Becuase of the hard work and generosity of the public the Rothes team won "The Firemaster Close" shield 97/98.
LINNBURN FUND RAISING
The main fundraising activity is a Christmas hamper worth over £100. Lucky squares are on sale at Linnburn and in local shops. The proceeds will go towards a Christmas dinner outing and other weekly trips which are greatly enjoyed. Thanks to all those who donated wool to make items for Oxfam. We would also like old LP records for our stereogram. If you have no further use of them please bring them to Linnburn.
GIRL GUIDES FUND RAISER
Rothes Girl Guides' recent walk in aid of Cerebral Palsy raised a total of £134
