LOCATION - map

Aberlour, officially named 'Charlestown on Aberlour' is in the middle of the Spey Valley between Inverness and Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland. It is surrounded by the Cairngorm Mountains on one side and the Moray Firth coastline on the other.
 
Aberlour is famous for it's two main industries - Shortbread and Whisky. The Walker family has been producing shortbread in Aberlour for over a century and there are over 50 whisky distilleries within a 15 mile radius.
 
Aberlour Orphanage, which housed up to 500 children, was built in 1882 and closed in 1967. The Clock Tower remains and there is also a memorial garden.
 
The river Spey runs through Aberlour and salmon fishing is a popular pastime for residents and tourists.
   
The road network links to all the major towns and villages. The nearest railway stations are Elgin, Keith and Aviemore. Air travel is served by Inverness (Dalcross Airport) and Aberdeen (Dyce Airport)
ATTRACTIONS IN ABERLOUR

Aberlour is situated on The River Spey, which is in itself an attraction for fishermen seeking salmon and tourists requiring a peaceful and enjoyable holiday.  The area is set in spectacular scenery and has a great history.  It is well worth looking at the Introduction to Speyside and The River Spey to find out more about the "spirit" and why Craigellachie is called so. Charlestown of Aberlour is quite a small town which lies on the banks of the Spey with several distilleries and many places of interest.  The area surrounding the former railway station has been attractively landscaped and is now the Alice Littler Park.  Please take a look at the Aberlour page which details most of the interesting  places and buildings and gives an accurate description of the town.

Touring Aberlour

Within the town's boundaries there is the Pack Horse Bridge, the Victoria Bridge, Aberlour's Orphanage and the Alice Littler Park (all of which can be found in the Introduction to Aberlour.  There is also the world famous Walker's Shortbread Factory, Aberlour House Preparatory School, C A Gammack the saddler and ironmonger, quality clothes shops JAJ Munro and Country Cousins and the Old Pantry restaurant. 

Things to Do

The pleasant surroundings hosts bowling, a modern children's play park, fishing, putting, riding, swimming, tennis and walks on the Speyside Way.  The Speyside Way Visitor Centre and Ranger Service HQ is at Boat of Fiddich where visitors can take a look at the Speyside Way route and find out about the local countryside.

Castle Hunting
- Ballindalloch has a 16th Century Castle in the seat of the MacPherson-Grant Family and there is a 17th Century doocot and rock garden on the land. 

Fishing - Fishing  is available on the River Spey at the Lower Wester Elchies, Haugh of Elchies and Wester Elchies which also has 80 acres for fishing and shooting holidays.  Also the River Avon fishing permits can be obtained from the Estate Office at Ballindalloch Castle on 01807 500205. 

The Whisky Trail - There are lots of whisky related activities on offer so please have a look at The Whisky Trail to find out about the neighbouring distilleries and The Moray Council award winning site gives an excellent overview of the area.  Distilleries surround the area offering people the opportunity to see how whisky is produced, facts about the whisky industry and a tour of the distilling rooms.  Cardhu at Knockando and Glenfarclas at Ballindalloch both welcome visitors.
